Elon Musk is developing implantable brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) that connect human brains directly to computers and other devices. This technology aims to enable humans to control computers and other devices with their thoughts and restore certain functions to people who have lost them due to injury or illness.

While there have been reports of successful trials of Neuralink’s BMI technology in animals, the company has not yet received approval from regulatory agencies to implant the devices in humans. Additionally, it’s important to note that implanting technology into the human brain raises many ethical and privacy concerns that must remain addressed before widespread use occurs.

Elon Musk has stated that his brain-interface technology business, Neuralink, expects to begin implanting its microchips in humans next year.

Musk co-founded Neuralink in 2016 to build a chip implanted in people’s brains to monitor and stimulate brain activity simultaneously. Its medical applications include the treatment of severe spinal cord injuries and neurological diseases.

Musk remained asked what Neuralink remains expected to do in 2022 during a live-streamed conversation at The Wall Street Journal CEO Council Summit on Monday.

“Neuralink is working well in monkeys,” Musk added, “and we’re actually doing a lot of testing and just confirming that it’s very safe and reliable, and the Neuralink device can remain safely removed.”

“We hope to have this in our first humans — people with severe spinal cord injuries like tetraplegics, quadriplegics — next year, pending FDA approval,” he continued.

During a “show and tell” recruitment event Wednesday night, Elon Musk’s health tech business Neuralink showcased advances in its brain-implant technology. During the occasion, Musk stated that he intends to obtain one of the implants.

Musk stated that two of the company’s applications would try to restore eyesight, even for people born blind, and that a third application would focus on the motor cortex, restoring “full body functionality” for patients with spinal cords severed. “We’re confident that there are no physical limitations to restoring full body functionality,” Musk stated.

Musk stated that Neuralink might begin testing the motor cortex technology in humans in as little as six months.

“We want to be extremely cautious and certain that it will work well before putting a device in a human,” he said, “but we’ve submitted, I believe, the majority of our paperwork to the FDA.”

Musk has stated that he intends to purchase one. “You could have a Neuralink device implanted now and have no idea. In other words, hypothetically. “I will participate in one of these demonstrations,” he stated. He reiterated this on Twitter following the incident.

Because none of Neuralink’s devices have been tested on humans or approved by the FDA, Xing Chen, assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, is skeptical.

Musk and a group of other scientists and engineers launched Neuralink in 2016. It aims to create brain-computer interfaces, or BCIs, which connect the human brain to computers capable of deciphering neural signals.

Musk has invested tens of millions of dollars from his fortune in the company and has stated, without evidence, that Neuralink’s gadgets might enable “superhuman cognition,” allow paralyzed people to manage cellphones or robotic limbs with their minds, and “solve” autism and schizophrenia.

Musk displayed a video of a monkey with a computer chip implanted in its skull playing “telepathic video games,” which Neuralink initially demonstrated over a year ago. The billionaire, who owns Tesla and SpaceX and is the new owner of Twitter, stated that he intends to implant Neuralink chips into people with quadriplegia with brain or spinal injuries. So that they can “control a computer mouse, or their phone, or really any device just by thinking.”

Neuralink has remained chastised for its alleged treatment of monkeys. On Wednesday, the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine demanded that Musk release details about monkey experiments that resulted in internal bleeding, paralysis, chronic infections, seizures, declining psychological health, and death.

According to Anna Wexler, an assistant professor of medical ethics and health policy at the University of Pennsylvania’s Perelman School of Medicine, Neuralink’s glitzy presentations are rare for firms in the medical devices market. She believes it is risky to instill hope in people with severe disabilities, significantly if they may suffer harm as the device remains installed during surgery.

Wexler advised people to wear their “skeptical hat” regarding Neuralink’s bold claims.

“From an ethical standpoint, the hype is very concerning,” she added. “Space or Twitter is one thing, but when it comes to medicine, the stakes are much higher.”

Chen, a BCI expert, stated that Neuralink’s implants would necessitate a highly invasive operation, and doctors must drill a hole in the skull to put the device into the brain tissue.

Nonetheless, she believes that some people are willing to accept the risk.

“There are several disorders, such as epilepsy, Parkinson’s disease, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, in which people have received brain implants, and the disorders have remained treated quite successfully, allowing them to have an improved quality of life,” Chen explained. “So I believe there is precedent for doing this.”

Wexler feels the decision will eventually come down to a patient’s risk-benefit analysis.

Neuralink is not the only firm attempting to innovate with BCIs, and many have made significant progress in recent years. Blackrock Neurotech will release a BCI system next year, making it the first commercially available BCI in history. Synchron got FDA approval in 2021 to commence a clinical trial for a permanently implanted BCI, and Paradromics is reportedly planning to begin in-human testing in 2023.
