Science Projects for School Students: 10 Ideas That Actually Work

Science Projects for School Students
If you are looking for ways to inspire kids to become interested in STEM studies, look for projects that give them quick results or that allow them to track an experiment’s daily progress. There are plenty of 5th-grade science project ideas that you can do with readily available household items.

1. Make a Rainbow in the Dark

To teach a child about light and the color spectrum, grab an old CD. Place it shiny side up on a table. In the dark, have the child shine the light on the CD and slowly rock the beam back and forth. At some point, a rainbow will reflect on a wall.

2. Float Metal

This experiment demonstrates surface tension. Fill a glass with water and have each child place a paperclip on the water. They should sink. Next, bend a clip into a U shape, and balance another paperclip on the inside. Lower and float the paperclip on the water’s surface.

3. Make Frost

To start a conversation about the weather, make frost. Place ice and lots of table salt into a tin can. Stir or shake the mixture. The can will slowly chill, and frost will form on the outside.

4. Turn Liquid to Matter

Making slime is a fun way to show how liquids can turn into solids. Mix 1/4 cup each of water and white glue in one bowl, and add some food coloring. Next, blend a 1/2 tablespoon of Borax and 1/2 cup water. Pour both of these into a Ziploc-style baggie, and knead into slime.

5. Volume

Demonstrate volume by making elephant toothpaste. Add a dash of dish soap, about 1/2 cup of hydrogen peroxide, and food coloring into a plastic bottle with a funnel. Swirl together, then add a premade solution of 1/2 cup of warm water and a yeast packet. It will create a foamy mess.

6. Geology

Make a volcano with a plastic bottle. You can paint it to look like a mountain. Add 1/4 cup vinegar and a few drops of red food coloring to the container. To make the lava, quickly top it with a spoonful of baking soda.

7. Oxidation

Turn pennies green to show off kids real examples of chemical reactions. Soak a paper towel in vinegar, and place the pennies on it. Sprinkle some salt on them, and they should start turning green within the hour.

8. More Chemical Reactions

Do another chemical reaction project with an apple and some lemon juice. Cut the apple into slices and put them in two dishes. Leave one bowl alone, and add lemon juice to the other apples. The lemon-covered apples will not turn brown.

9. Grow Food

Quarter a potato, and have kids place them in trays of water. In a few days, the eyes of the potatoes will start to sprout.

10. Food into Fuzz

Cut a lemon in half, and have the child mash the inside with a spoon or fork. Add some food coloring to the lemon and top with baking soda.

There are even more 5th grade science project ideas online, including through reliable sources such as the Adobe Education Exchange. Asana education discount is great as a project management solution, especially when working with teams. However, it isn’t great at being a task manager/to-do list application. These learning tools can help make science exciting and get a young person more involved in science and technology.
