Internet: What is it, Types, Services, and More.

We explain what the Internet is and what the different types of internet connections are. Your history, services and other browsers.

What is the Internet

The Internet is a network of computers that are connected to each other around the world to exchange information. It is a network of computing devices linked together through the use of a universal language.

The concept of the Internet has its roots in the English language. And is still the word inter (between) and net (from a network that means electronic network). It is a term that should always be capitalized as it refers to “The Network” (which connects computers around the world using the TCP / IP protocol) and without an accompanying article (his / her) referring to it . There are different types of Internet connections, that is, other means by which one can connect to networks.

The first of these was the dial-up connection, which is the connection of a telephone line via a cable. Then other more modern types such as ADSL, fiber optic, 3G and 4G (LTE) connectivity emerged.

To access the billions of websites available on the vast network of networks we know as the Internet, the web browsers (software) used, some of the most popular Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and Safari, all of them Different companies have developed the technology.

How did the Internet come about?

It is further said that the origin of the Internet can be traced back to a military project developed by ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Networks). A Department of Defense computer network attempted to create a computer network that would interconnect defense research centers in the event of an attack, so as to maintain remote contact and not disrupt their operations even if some of their nodes were left destroyed. In any case, his original intention was to find other uses for the computer besides the calculator.

In 1989 there was an initial proposal to use computers and links to build a network that later became known as WWW (World Wide Web), which refers to a set of rules that enables the retrieval of hypertext files (HTTP).

Sir Timothy Berners-Lee, a British engineer, made the first proposal for WWW that year and later achieved the first successful communication by implementing HTTP.

Types of internet connections

Since the Internet is a network, it can still be reached through various channels.

Telephone lines. You can use a phone line that remains split into conventional phone lines (it carries signals in an analog way. But they have now been replaced with others that offer greater advantages) or digital (using a network adapter preserves the resulting frames) from the computer in digital signals translated).

Fiber optic cable). It can also be a cable connection (which implements light signals instead of electrical signals that encode a large amount of information. The cable, in turn, is made of a material called fiber optic to carry data between nodes).

Satellite. The satellite connection (we usually speak of a hybrid satellite and telephone connection system to reduce congestion on terrestrial networks).

Wireless networks. In return, we can implement wireless networks (replace cables with infrared light signals or radio waves to carry information). In short, within wireless networks, LMDS (an abbreviation for Local Multipuntoint Distribution System and consists of the use of high frequency radio waves) is another method that is used.

Power lines. We use PLC (conjunction of three words: Power Line Communications) when we talk about power lines. Finally, we can use mobile telephony (which refers to the communication available to cell phones to access the Internet).

Internet services and uses

The Internet will open the doors to thousands upon thousands of different services, among which will allow us to:

Search for all the information you need (e.g. on Google).

Buy products of various kinds (for example from Amazon or Mercado Libre).

Communicate with family or friends in other countries or cities using a video call (e.g. Skype or WhatsApp).

Play online games (like League of Legends) with people of different nationalities and ages in real time.

Of course, a word that sums up all of these qualities that the Internet possesses can connect or relate to one another. The Internet can connect people in different parts of the world and with different interests.
